Work Safe

Drug and Alcohol-Free Workplace

Employee drug testing can deter abusers from reporting to work unfit for duty and discourage others from applying in the first place. It can also help support a decision for reduced or eliminated workers compensation benefits after an injury where alcohol or drugs were involved. Having a process in place prior to an accident is a key element to ensuring a seamless and successful workplace drug testing program.

Formalize your testing policy
If you haven’t already, take the time to get your drug-free workplace policy in place. Many workers compensation providers will reimburse you up to $55 for post-accident testing ONLY if you have a written substance abuse policy. You also must conduct the screens within 24 hours of the time of the alleged injury, and the testing must be done by an appropriate medical provider.

Secure a provider
Make arrangements for drug testing with a local provider in advance. Be sure to select a provider who can also administer new hire and random drug screenings throughout the course of employment.
